Coming back, I met a couple trying to climb up the trail and he thought it went below this on the gray patch and I watched him, appalled, as he struggled against the gravel and slippery rocks. I shouted down to him that I didn't think that was the trail. It was apparently so harrowing for him that the couple decided to turn around and they never got to the McNeil Point shelter, just fifteen minutes away from this point. The correct route, up on the left, was hard enough as it was, for me at least.
