On Dec 7, 1941, at approximately 7:00am Japanese bombers attacked Pearl Harbor. Over 2000 U.S. lives were lost that day, some of which were civilians.
On the USS Arizona alone, approximately 1177 sailors died, many of which are still entombed in the body of the ship, which sank where it was moored, on Battleship Row.
We visited the memorial on our last day in Hawaii.
The names of all the sailors/Marines from the USS Arizona who died that day are etched in this marble wall. One thousand, one hundred seventy-seven of them.
There is a portion of the wall, in the far left lower corner with significantly fewer names on it. It lists the survivors of the Arizona who chose to be interred with their
shipmates when they died.
