Kentucky and Tennessee

Driving from Ohio to Georgia, I chose to stop at several attractions.

Fort Boonesborough, KY, is a recreation of Daniel Boone's fort.

Rugby, TN was founded around 1880 by the author of Tom Brown's school days. He named it after his alma mater, and intended for it to be a Utopian society. There are still several Victorian buildings standing. I learned about Rugby from the store clerk at the Sgt Alvin C. York General Store in Pall Mall, TN. The clerk lives in Rugby, and thought I would enjoy it. She was right.

Pall Mall, TN is the home-place of Sgt Alvin C. York, who was the most decorated soldier in WW I. His record is even more impressive when you realize that he was a conscientious objector. I learned about him from the Hollywood movie, starring Gary Cooper. In appreciation for his wartime service, the Tennessee Rotary Club gave him 400 acres of bottomland and a house. York is buried in a cemetery about a mile from the house. His birthplace is near there, as well, but the cabin no longer exists.

I stopped in Lexington for the night, to ensure a full day for sight-seeing. There was still some daylight, so I drove around looking at the various horse farms.

same patient mama.jpg		 At Fort Boonesborough, they have set up three cabins to demonstrate the living conditions of the time. This cabin shows how a person who had newly arrived would live. Dirt floor, no windows, minimal furnishings.

I just finished reading a biog of D. Boone by Bobert Morgan and am interested in learning the route to the places where he lived.
