On a recent job the Sony PCM-R300 would not load some DAT tapes so I pulled my Tascam-D30 off the shelf which had probably only been used for 10 tapes over a couple of times for 30 years.
Everything was fine however, the 3rd tape would not rewind and when ejected there was tape hanging out of it.
Testing with other tapes indicated that either something was braking the rewind on one of the hubs or not engaging the gears.
Time to rip the mechanism apart- gently.
Oh boy there are a lot of moving parts in this thing.
All of the moving parts appear to move, time to check the motor and the solenoid.
Checked the solenoid - it works and moves the lever arms.
Checked the motor connected to the encoder block - it moves the wheel back and forth and will probably move the brake boss.
