apply filters to new layers

When a filter isn't dependent upon the pixel texture of the image,
it can be advantageous to apply the filter to a new layer.
This method is non-destructive and allows for easier editing.
Make new layer, usually with the Overlay mode and check the box for
Fill with 50% Overlay-neutral gray. (Alt+click on the new layer icon)
Then run the filter on this new layer.
All options are then available to modify your filter layer:
Opacity and fill %, Layer mode, blur or sharpen, etc.
Best of all, you can delete the layer to start over.
This example has two filters on separate layers
1. Simulated grain with Add Noise and Gaussian blur
2. Lighting Effects and mode changed to color burn
