Complex piecing will have junctions with many pieces of fabric coming together at a single point. If they are not sewn and pressed correctly, they leave large bumps in the quilt which are unsightly, misshapen, and difficult to quilt.
The compound seams in Jan's quilt were almost as flat as single seams. My long arm machine glided over these seams without a single problem.
