Indegenous Textiles - Chiapas, Guatemala

This collection of photographs displays examples of the clothing made for personal use as well as items made for commercial purposes.

The indegenous women of Chiapas, Mexico and Guatemala continue to weave as their ancestors have for centuries. The backstrap loom is still prevalent throughout this culturally vibrant area. Each “village” produces it’s own unique design. A woman’s clothing identifies her village. Among these women are many master weavers producing articles of exceptional quality and captivating beauty.

The women have established cooperatives to provide a more effective means of marketing their products, thereby bringing financial support to their families. In Chiapas and Guatemala millions of people live on less than $2 a day. Income generated by textile sales is helpful in improving food security and providing education and medical care. Some of these items are available for purchace. Inquire: miaplaco@gmail.com
