This gallery displays pictures from an exhaustive trip all the way around Morocco and the Western Sahara. I was travelling on my own for 25 days all the while driving 8300km. Driving was mostly easy, cities can create a challenge for western citizens. Entering and driving in the Western Sahara was easy, no problems were encountered, people were extremely friendly and helpful.
Two points should be stressed: 1. The pictured Golden Nightjar was first seen by a group of German birdwatchers who very friendly shared the location with me. Driving there proved impossible with a normal car, I hitchhiked 35km into the desert and met some very friendly gold prospectors. The site was the first known breeding location of the Golden Nightjar for Morocco thus care was taken not to disturb the birds. Over the timespan of several hours I was around, I stayed most of the time away from the bird. The chicks were quite mobile and causing the female to be quite active too. Thus different scenes could be photographed, which the setting sun the female started to give some soft calls and moved more out into the open. The site was left shortly after this and the bird was seen with its chicks for the next days by other birders. As of the 9th of April two chicks were seen flying with their adults at the very location.
2. The Marsh Owl was seen with a well-known guide in order to minimize disturbance and support locals who care for the remaining Owls. Two birds were seen and heard calling at dusk.
All in all, almost all target birds were seen, I've observed almost 200 species of birds and hugely enjoyed myself.
