In late spring 2017 I decided to apply for the BRC. Once my application was accepted, it was on my to organise a flight, which lead to the decision to bird some time prior to the actual BRC volunteering. Armenia held some nice species and stunning landscape, which attracted me, so I flew to Yerevan 3 weeks before the Raptor Count. I rented a LADA 4x4 and set off. In the coming days and weeks I explored the southern areas of Armenia and enjoyed myself massively. Sleeping in the car was pleasant, days were hot and the weather always sunny. I found, as usual, most of my targets and missed a few species due to timing or bad luck. My visit to Kazbegi was not granted with success, the car was damaged by horses and I failed to climb high enough for the high mountain species- another time, another try.
The BRC was demanding work, and one of the best things I have ever done. Anyone interested in raptors, improving his ID-skills or just admire huge numbers of migrating raptors is strongly advised to volunteer and join this amazing experience.
