Colorado is a state where the landscape itself is an absolute work of art. The mountain views, world-class skiing spots, and plenty of outdoor activity opportunities exist. Yet, for those who want more cultural variety, there are places where you can find local art. Whether it’s a Cherry Creek art gallery or one of the many art museums Denver has to offer, you’re bound to find something in Colorado when it comes to local art. We will be taking a look at five different places throughout the state where you can find art created by the people who call Colorado home.
Cherry Creek North is located in an upscale area of Denver. If you are looking for art with a side of luxury and high-end options for dining and shopping, this could be the place for you. For those that are casual browsers or collectors, you might find a Cherry Creek art gallery that is best suited for your tastes and preferences. There are plenty of showcases featuring artists from the local area and the Rocky Mountain region.
You’ll see everything from landscape paintings, abstract pieces, glasswork, and modern sculptures among others. Cherry Creek North prides itself in featuring art from creators from Colorado and the Rocky Mountain region, which is a testament to how important their local culture is. The best time to go here is in July when the annual Cherry Creek Arts Festival is going on. This will feature over 200 artists from Colorado and even across the country for a weekend celebration that culture lovers will enjoy.
Staying in the Denver area with this next place, we come to RiNo - which is short for River North. This neighborhood boasts large-scale murals and street art that makes this part of Denver come alive with color. What you might notice is a mix of creativity with industrial grit - making it one of the more intriguing places to visit not just in Denver but all of Colorado. You’ll see open-air art galleries on the walls of buildings, mixed-use studio spaces where artists put together their work in real time, and First Friday art walks every month.
RiNo is where urban art culture lives. If you are someone that appreciates the edginess and experimental style of this type of art, you’ll feel right at home here. Don’t miss out on mural tours and learn about the stories behind them. It will give you a deep understanding of an artist’s creative works and what makes it so unique.
Colorado Springs could give Denver and the rest of the state a run for its money when it comes to art (especially when $2 million is invested in the state’s arts and cultural space). If you find yourself here, be sure to visit the downtown area. Start off at Acacia Park where you’ll see plenty of public installations. Next, don’t miss out on visiting the Cottonwood Center for the Arts where you’ll see plenty of rotating exhibitions. Finally, the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College, where you will see exhibitions along with plenty of lectures, workshops, and so much more.
The creative side of people like you will enjoy a place like downtown Colorado Springs. One minute you are soaking in the local art. Next you are seeing a theatrical performance. This might as well be heaven on earth for someone that appreciates the arts like yourself.
Home to the University of Colorado, Boulder has a cultural center that is a must-visit. One place we highly recommend you don’t want to miss is Pearl Street Mall. This is where you’ll see a number of galleries including the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art (BMoCA). Local artists and nationally known artists will have their work featured here for art lovers to see.
If you are in the area, be sure to check out the Canyon Gallery that’s located at the Boulder Public Library. Then you can shop the Art Mart for a few gifts or art pieces you can display proudly at home. To wind down, the R Gallery + Wine Bar will be a great place to enjoy the local art scene while enjoying a glass of your favorite wine. You can make the most of your day here in Boulder just by simply getting in touch with the art lover side of you.
If you are not far away from the Colorado Springs area, you could consider visiting Manitou Springs. You may notice some differences between here and Colorado Springs. If you are more of the quirky art type of a deep affinity for bohemian vibes, you’re going to absolutely love this place. The one place to check out is the Manitou Art Center (MAC) where you can check out plenty of exhibits.
MAC also has co-working spaces and a community incubator. Simply put, you’ll see that this is a space where the community artists will thrive and put on their best work. If you are looking for an idea of when to travel here, we highly suggest the Labor Day weekend. That’s when the Commonwheel Arts Festival takes place. Artists from across the state will converge here and exhibit their best art works here. Couple that with mountain views and it’ll be an unforgettable experience for creatives and art lovers alike in Manitou Springs of all places in Colorado.
These five places in Colorado are excellent for finding local art. You can also find excellent opportunities to immerse yourself into the local art scene. Whether you live in the state yourself or visiting from elsewhere, there’s always something you can find for the love of culture. You’ll be quite surprised by the amount of art you’ll see created by locals.
If you love Colorado and want to bring a piece of it home, you’ll find plenty of opportunities at any of these five places. Bring home a piece of artwork from a local artist. Participate in art walks and feast your eyes on absolute works of beauty. Lastly, enjoy the beautiful environment that might as well be art itself.
