Thank you for this site. I was hunting in Mansfield MA and my son and i found a foot print we could not identify. We now know that it is a fisher cat. The prints went right up a tree and we have not seen any squiruals or rabbits.

AT ~ 1 PM ON A BEAUTIFUL OCTOBER DAY IN 2006, WE LOST OUR SWEET POM. HE WAS LET OUT TO DO HIS BUSINESS BY A FAMILY MEMBER. SHE WATCHED HIM LAYING NEXT TO OUR LAB (WHO WAS TIED DUE TO HIS ROAMING) NEAR THE DRIVEWAY AND NEVER SAW HIM AGAIN. WE SEARCHED FOR HIM FOR WHAT SEEMED LIKE AN ETERNITY AND POSTED LOST DOG PHOTOS. WE SPOTTED A FISHER IN OUR POND ~ A WEEK LATER AND FEARED THE WORST. NOBODY INSIDE HEARD ANY COMMOTION BUT OUR LAB WAS SHAKING THAT AFTERNOON. OUR NEWFIE BROUGHT US HIS LEG ABOUT A MONTH LATE.......YES GRUESOME BUT CLOSURE WAS SOMEWHAT MET. WE BURRIED IT AND WARNED OUR NEIGHBORS ABOUT THIS MENACE. WE HAD NEVER LET OUR ANIMALS OUT AT NIGHT WITHOUT A LEASH AND OUR PRESENCE AND NOW I WILL FOREVER BE AT OUR COMPANIONS' SIDE IN BROAD DAYLIGHT. I HAVE HEARD OF THESE CRITTERS ATTACKING HUMANS SO PLEASE KEEP WATCH OVER YOUR BELOVED PETS AND CHILDREN!!!!
STILL MOURNING BUT LESSON LEARNED THE HARD WAY!!

Do fisher cats bother with children? Kids were out at bus stop this morning, and a fisher cat went by the group of kids, and ran across the street into the woods. Bus driver spotted the fisher cat and said something to the kids. Have warned animal owners in neighborhood, but what about kids?

Fisher's are nasty little creatures, however they are protected in Mass. The best defense with these animals is to keep your domestic animals in the house. I have a fisher living in the barn and don't even let my dogs out at night without me standing right there with them. While I feel badly about lost dogs and cats, they are nothing more than a snack for a fisher. You are the caretakers of your animals. Keep them safe by keeping them inside or walked on a leash when outside. Never let an animal roam.

I work at a dog daycare in Cambridge and one of our regular dogs, a 1.5 year old yorkie went missing Friday night, 3/14/08. He lives in Lexington. His owners looked for him all weekend and on Sunday heard from a neighbor that she heard screaming that sounded like a dog on Friday night right around the time Ziggy disappeared. The same neighbor lost her cat to a fisher cat fairly recently, so she knows there is one in the area. So sad and horrible!! I was not aware fisher cats were in Massachusetts!
Thanks for creating this forum!

hello everyone. I come out of west greenwich Rhode Island and I have to say that u can see these animals only by their eyes if they are out of normal range. With the help of a flashlight the light will interact with the fishers light sensative retina. the eyes will appear to glow white or yellow depending upon the flashlight but if the animal is looking at the light then u will see its eyes but not its body. It doesnt matter how great the distance the light will reach the eye of the animal...this is also true for foxes racoons dogs and cats alike. And in response to the last comment: of course this animal is capable of eating a human..its a matter of circumstance but if there was enough of them I would say it is absolutley plausible that this animal could attack and eat a human..is it likely...well of course not..hope this answers your question

are there Fisher cats in Little Compton, RI? I have had two cats go missing within two months. My first cat disappeared in October. Now my second cat is missing as of Dec 13th.
Thankyou
