The monastery, famed for its unique perch on the side of a steep, rocky cliff 3,120m above sea level, is the iconic image of Bhutan. Legend has it, Guru Rinpoche, known as the second Buddha of Bhutan, arrived here from Tibet on the back of a tigress, and mediated in a cave for 3 years, 3 months, 3 weeks, and 3 days.
