Tiananmen means The Gate of Heavenly Peace. The Square is considered the largest one in the world with the Great Hall of People (equivalent of the Capitol Hill) on the right and the History Museum on the left, both built in 1959. In the center is the Monument to the People's Heroes. Behind it is the Chairman Mao's Mausoleum built in the late 1970s. The street that runs from left (east) to right (west) is Changan (or Everlasting Peace) Blvd. that can be as wide as 310 ft. Major celebrations and demonstrations have been held here.
