Food & Board

Food: Typical Tibetan food are heavy on meat and grease. Yak beef was chewy, and lamb was over cooked. Red pepper must be the most popular spice and was used in most of the dishes. Yak butter tea was offered as the staple beverage, and cost less than plain water. Tibetan monks do eat yak beef and lamb/mutton, and a typical Tibetan would not eat any meat other than beef and lamb/mutton as these two are considered the cleanest of all meat.

Lodging: The accomodation varies from place to place. Once outside the major cities, a dorm with multiple beds were the standard, with restrooms 100 yards away and public showers on the main street if it were available. A thermal bottle of hot water was offered and could be used at one's own discretion. I chose to save it as drinking water, and walk on muddy roads to fetch the ice cold water in the courtyard to wash face and brush teeth. At Namtso lake, the restroom was as big as one could imagine with panoramic scenic view, fresh air, flies buzzing all over you, and nomad dogs barking none stop.
