Skagway

Skagway, the "Land of the North Wind", once unexplored and uninhabited, became the largest city in Alaska in 1898. A peak population reached 20K - after gold was discovered in the Yukon region. Thousands of gold prospectors risked their lives going through the White Pass and Chilkoot Pass - 600-mile treks across rugged, frozen terrain to the Klondike gold fields. Many died, but fortunes were also made - over $50 million in gold was pulled out in just four years.

Today's Skagway, with a population of around 1000, maintains the look of a rustic pioneering town. A few historical buildings are preserved: The Golden North Hotel, the Arctic Brotherhood Hall, and the Red Onion Saloon.
