Arches National Park

Day 2. I was woken around 3:00am by a thunderstorm and it was a precursor to the day. My first stop in the park today was to see how the light looked at the Three Gossips. The light was just flat storm could gray, plenty of that around today. I drove up to Balanced Rock and has a break in the sky, there was blue. I’m not a really all that impressed with Balanced Rock at Arches, I think the Balanced Rock in Idaho is a much bigger marvel (it’s 40 tons resting on a pedestal only 3 feet by 17 inches). So I just took that pedestrian snap shots and moved on to The Windows section. Nice think about the Windows sections is you can get to four different arches from one parking lot. I started at Double Arch. The 12-24mm worked great for this whole area. I was all kinds of happy at Double Arch until a yellow school bus dropped off about a million screaming 5th graders. It was time for me to move on. I moved to Turret Arch, then The North and South Windows. I took the Windows Primitive loop trail to get the backside view of the Windows. My next stop was Delicate Arch viewpoint. After having lunch in the parking lot, I walked the upper viewpoint trail “Moderately strenuous. Winds up onto slickrock ridge. Winter Camp Wash separates the viewpoint form the arch itself.” All I took up was the 12-24mm; it was the wrong lens to try to get the arch. I’ll try to go back with the 70-200mm. My next stop was at Wolfe Ranch to hike up to Delicate Arch. A very ugly cloud rolling in, made me rethink that 3 mile round trip hike. So instead I drove up to Sand Dune Arch, then went over to Broken Arch. Of all the trails, I have found these two to be the easies and fastest. A wide angle like the 12-24mm works great for these two arches, but the area around them is very photogenic, so taking a 28-70mm or 70-200mm to get some of the surrounding areas. I went back to Wolfe Ranch just in time for the hard rain to really start falling and I decided to just call it a day.
