The modern road runs on what was the line of the original railroad. Keeping the line clear took so much effort for the CPR they built the 5 mile Connaught tunnel under Mount Macdonald. The road still suffers from the heavy snow fall, so the original avalanche tunnels were rebuilt and strengthened, but the RCMP often stop you travelling on the road in winter without chains.
