Boldt Castle - Alexandria Bay, New York

This history of Boldt Castle is a love story. George C. Boldt, proprietor of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel started to build a castle on Heart Island in Alexandria Bay, NY as a display of love for his wife, Louise.

The Boldts spent four summers on the island in the Alster Tower while workmen build a 120 room castle with a powerhouse, gardens, and drawbridge.

In 1904 Boldt send a telegram ordering the workers to stop all construction. Louise had died suddenly and Boldt could not go on with his dream without here. He never returned to the island.

The buildings were deserted for 73 years. In 1977 the property was acquired by the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority. All net revenues from the Castle operation go to preserve it.
