Mission San Xavier del Bac "White Dove of the Desert"

Mission San Xavier del Bac is located about 9 miles south of Tucson. The Tohono O'odham settlement in which the Mission is located was called Bac, "place where the water appears," because the Santa Cruz River, which ran underground for some distance, reappears on the surface nearby.

The mission church is a blend of Moorish, Byzantine and late Mexican architecture.

Unfortunately (for pictures) when we were there it was being restored on one side with scaffolding and plastic covering.
