bluebells in spring 2009

23rd April 2009 at Osterley Park in UK. This week bluebells are nearing their peak.

Great Britain supposedly has around 70% of the world's population of bluebells. The British bluebell has flowers only on oneside of the stalk, hence british bluebells hang their heads. It is a protected plant and cannot be damaged or harvested. The other variety (Spanish bluebell) has flowers on both sides of the stem equally balanced, therefore the Spanish type does not bend over.

Springtime bluebell viewing is a popular activiity where ancient woodlands are carpetted in wild bluebells.

This still reminds me of the film A room with a view.
