Religion

In the beginning
were the five-year-olds
asking those difficult questions:
"Where did we come from?"
"How did animals get here?"
"What was here before this world?"
And there were parents
attempting to answer, desiring quiet,
searching for a story that would end all questions,
at least until the next time...

Words were stretched, created new,
imagination met the Unknown,
and Myths were born in the answers,
stories shared at campfires over meals
to entertain the children,
keep them transfixed, safe at the fire,
away from the darkness around them,
and quiet.

They could not know
the dark trails their tales would forge.

I've better things to do than "discuss" theologies with someone who won't even reveal his or her real name.

Dear anonymous guest,

That is a small part of my much longer answer. Read much?

dear michelle,

"a man in the clouds"?

that's your "adult" answer?

Dear Anonymous Guest,

There are many answers provided by many people. I mention that to my son.
I tell him what some of those answers are. I also say that, ultimately, no one knows.

He asked me just last night, "why are we here". I went into what some
religions teach. And I told him that, for me, life has no inherent "meaning" but that
each of us can choose to create meaning in our own lives by loving, doing good,
helping others, improving oneself, etc. Seems to me that's better than spending
a lifetime on our knees begging forgiveness from a man in the clouds for being
a "sinful", lowly human worm.

so what answer do you now give as an "adult"?
