This third state record for Kansas, Painted Redstart, was our third encounter with this species on this trip. The Grants from Missouri found this vagrant on 5/5/11. It was gone on 5/7/11. Fellow Janzen tourer, Lisa Edwards of Colorado Springs, Colorado, found one singing near the grotto along the McKittrick Canyon trail in the Guadalupes, where they are practically non-existent.
