Launching from the Highway

I took a ride today to check on how the area was doing with the southerly wind. Many of the roads were starting to be affected by the rising water. The back area of my subdivision has water within a foot of the top of the hurricane protection levees, but so far, so good. I live in the very front of the subdivision on a ridge, so we will be fine. This is normally a small bayou with a boat launch and a nice parking lot around the building. These people were launching the boat from the highway. We drove into Jefferson Parish, I was in too much of awe at the damage to take many pictures. I did manage to take this through my husband's very dirty window. The billboard broke free and landed on the house below it.

I cringe with the people in the water and the electrical lines in there too :|

This looks like a good time to own a boat. All of us up here are wondering what is going to be done to prevent this from ever happening again.

Just wanted to let you know that those of us up here in north Louisiana (Monroe here,) are thinking about y'all. We got some rain and wind today from Rita but nothing like as bad as I expected. Y'all be safe down there...

Elaine ... this is so tragic. Everything lost. I feel deeply for y'all. I don't think New Orleans will ever be the same.

The water was four foot up the side of the building during Hurricane Juan so it looks like it the camp has a little room before it floods. It might get to the generator though. Hope not too many boats are going back there making waves. Great story in this shot.

By the way, quite a photo!

Are you sure you'll be fine? I know your house is high, but there's been a lot of building lately.

Great capture. I wonder if there's water in the camp.
