2010 Delta Ditch Run .... er, Beat

Saturday, June 12th dawned clear and breezy. Windy, actually. The Delta Ditch Run is a race named for the summer wind that blows upriver from the Bay, enabling spinnakers to fly all the way to Stockton - or so they say. This year, the wind was more northerly, and it was strong. The fleet beat across the starting line near the Richmond Yacht Club, beat up river past the Brothers and across San Pablo Bay, beat up Carquinez Strait. Finally, as we turned south toward Stockton, the beat turned to a reach and then a run - but the wind dropped to nearly nothing, and the run turned to an easing our way toward the finish. Some lost heart or turned sensible and started the engine. Some stuck it out, and the last boat finished close to 4 AM. Is it sadistic or generous for the Sailing Instructions to set the deadline to finish at 9 PM on Sunday?
