This gallery features railroad activity around Fremont and Newark, California, two cities located in the southern part of San Francisco's Bay Area. Fremont's Warm Springs Yard, built by Southern Pacific in the early 1960s, sits adjacent to the large NUMMI Auto Plant, a joint venture between GM and Toyota. Primarily handling auto rack cars, the yard remains a busy location. Six days a week a BNSF train visits the yard to interchange cars with Union Pacific.
After closure of the yard office in Santa Clara, Newark Yard gained additional importance. Trains operating between Roseville and Los Angeles via San Luis Obispo, over the ex-Southern Pacific route, now change crews here. Additionally, several locals work out of Newark servicing numerous industries in the immediate area, including Cargill's huge salt production facility.
