Summer 2008 - We, along with other members of the Cowichan Valley Camera Club, were fortunate to be involved with the photographic recording of Tribal Journeys, a cultural event with participants from Northwest Coast Native Americans and First Nations. Begun in 1989 to commemorate Northwest canoe peoples' cultural links to the marine environment, Tribal Journeys is a powerful expression of the highly sophisticated relationship between First Nations people and the ocean. Cowichan Tribes hosted over 80 traditional ocean going canoes, some of them coming from as far away as Northern Alaska, Washington and Oregon, as well as many BC Coastal Nations. Some of the canoes were on the water for two weeks prior to the July 28th, Landing Day at Cowichan Bay, Vancouver Island, BC, where they received with a traditional Coast Salish Welcome.
