Pears are one of the few fruits that have an extensive history, reaching back to about 1000 B.C.
Pears used to be called “butter fruit” for its soft, butter-like texture. Pears are harvested green
because they continue to ripen after removal from the tree. That way, producers of pears prevent them
from becoming overripe before they are made available in the supermarkets around the world. Pears are
