Our Amazing Tiger Lilly

This is our kind of flower. The birds must have carried the seeds over from the neighbour's yard, as
the Tiger Lily just appeared in our garden last summer, survived till this year and even multiplied.
With a little research I found that it is not unusual for Tiger Lilies to show up as a volunteer
plant, see the info below.

These flowers are not difficult to grow at all. All you need to do is to keep the soil wet, since
tiger lily flowers like dampness. The flower produces seeds, actually called “bulbils,” that are
small round structures, typically dark purple to almost black in color. Bulbils can be found at the
plant’s leaf axils -- the area where the leaf joins the stem. The bulbils will fall off the stems and
germinate readily, making for more beautiful blooms in the coming years.

These flowers don’t require fertilization. They only need fertilizers if you are planting them in
somewhat poor soil. Unlike other bulb flowers, tiger lilies require winter cold to grow healthily. If
planting bulbs of tiger lilies, you should make sure that the distance between them is from 9 to 12
inches and they should be planted 6 inches deep in a sunny location. ~ various Internet sites
