New Babies

Southern Vancouver Island

Surviving a late hatch, otters, mink, eagles, invasive bullfrogs, and hawks, these two ducklings rest under the watchful eye of mother.

Interesting fact: A hen will lead her ducklings up to a half mile or more over land after hatching in order to find a suitable water source for swimming and feeding.

Lovely capture. For several years a duck led her babies from the river (Taw) across a field, across a lane and through our garden to our tiny pond to teach them to swim.
