Part of the Whole

Chemainus, BC

The Cowichan Valley Trail is a spectacular multi-use trail that is an integral part of the Trans-Canada
Trail route on Southern Vancouver Island. From the south end of Shawnigan Lake to the Town of Lake
Cowichan, the trail follows the gentle grade of the former turn of the century CN railway line that
served pioneer logging and settlement communities. The trail continues from the Town of Lake Cowichan
to Sherman Road following the former E&N rail grade. The waterline route through the Municipality of
North Cowichan has been complete as well as new sections linking Chemainus to the Nanaimo Regional
District.

The Trans Canada Trail is the world's longest network of trails. When completed, the Trail will
stretch 22,000 kilometres from the Atlantic to the Pacific to the Arctic Oceans, linking 1,000
communities and 33 million Canadians. Today, more the 16,500 kilimetres of trail have been developed.
Millions of Canadians and international visitors are using the Trail to hike, cycle, ski, horseback
ride, canoe and snowmobile across the country. The creation of the trail was announced as part of
Canada's 125th anniversary celebrations in 1992. ~ www.tctrail.ca
