Before The Storm That Wasn't

Yellow Point, Vancouver Island, BC

Overnight wind and rain hammered the northern end of Vancouver Island, resulting in a 100 yard wide
by 15 foot deep mudslide that blocked access to one town, the flooding of 5 creeks that isolated
residents of another and loss of electricity in the region. A state of emergency was declared for
the northern most town on the tip of the island.

The morning after the deluge forecasters warned that the storm would make its way down the island,
expecting intense winds and rain to continue along its path. We braced ourselves, anticipating the
worst, and about 5 pm we looked out and saw a huge line of black clouds advancing towards us. By 6
pm the sky was and intense black, the winds were rising and we decided to go out and photograph the
event before the rains came. Within about 45 minutes the clouds dissipated to a muddy grey, the wind
lessened, we had light rain and you could almost feel the sighs of relief from local residents as
the weather that was forecast to be a storm wasn't.
