Much of the logging done in BC takes place on the islands and inlets of the north coast. These logs are then transported by barge to locations where they can be prepared for processing at the larger mills either on Vancouver Island or the south coast of the province. The first time I saw a log barge being 'dumped', or unloaded, I was awed. There are several individual compartments located in the body of the barge. The compartments on one side of the barge are flooded with sea water, causing it to tip 'dramatically' and when the critical point is reached all the logs slide off into the water . After the initial splash, they are collected and towed to the local booming grounds.
