Enjoying the Evening Sun

Southern Vancouver Island

The evening sun caught the top of this young eaglet's wing just as it was jumping from one side of the nest to the other. Eaglets build their skills gradually and the three in this nest practice 'pre-flight manoeuvres' several times a day, strengthening both their wings and confidence. Bald Eagle facts: Higher predators are born with instincts that urge them to fly, to bite or to pounce, but precisely how to do these things is another matter. Through months of trial and error, eagles acquire basic skills such as lighting on perches or stooping on prey through practice. The parents cannot tell juveniles how to hunt, they have to learn by watching the parents. During this time, the eaglets seem to spend more time looking at prey than they do actually attacking it. However, eagles practice with almost fully developed bodies, and so sharpen their skills quickly. ~ baldeagleinfo.com

Great shot. The eagle looks a little soggy, like the rest of us here lately.
