Great Blue Herons are slow moving birds, until they spot their prey, then they strike with amazing speed. This bird was moving quietly through the marsh, watching for small animals or fish that might make a good breakfast. You’ll notice it has a broken wing feather, which will eventually fall away and be replaced during the next molting season, when old stumps are shed and new feathers grow out. If, however, the stumps are pulled out sooner the feathers will be renewed in a few weeks or even days.
