This female Common Merganser seems to have claimed this log as part of her home territory. We've noticed her here a few times and today she stayed around just long enough for us to get a few shots of her. Common Merganser facts: These large fish-eaters have serrated edges to their bills to help them grip their prey. Along with the Smew and the other Mergansers, they are often known as "sawbills."
