Heavy rain in the Cowichan Region has filled fields, normally dry, with excess runoff and waterfowl are showing up to take advantage of the new food source. This Northern Shoveler, whose diet is about 60% vegetation, is happily feasting in the flooded areas that are rich with a variety of plant life. Northern Shoveler facts: Its elongated, spoon-shaped bill has comblike projections along its edges, which filter out food from the water.
