It was time for a trip to Skutz Falls on the Cowichan River, a prime location to watch spawning salmon battle up the rapids in their journey to reach the spawning grounds. Unfortunately we were beset with rain and wind, not great for the photographer, but the salmon didn't seem to mind. Salmon facts: When thousands of mature salmon spawn and die, they do far more than produce another generation. This source of nutrition, arriving in the fall, allows many animals such as such as bear, eagle, mink and river otter (to name just a few) to survive the harshness of winter.
