Port Hardy Bay

Port Hardy, BC

A view of the Coast Mountains looking across Port Hardy Bay greeted us as we went for our morning coffee and it was so beautiful we just stopped and enjoyed the sight. Port Hardy facts: The First Nations settled at Bear Cove more than 8,000 years ago, across Hardy Bay from the current town site, leaving the oldest archeological evidence found anywhere on Vancouver Island. Though the first European settlers arrived in 1904, the village housed only a few people until 1912. By 1914, 12 families had settled and built a school, sawmill, church, and hotel. By 1916, the community had begun to build trails to surrounding communities establishing the foundation for its contemporary role as regional supply centre. The District of Port Hardy was officially incorporated in 1966.
