Nature's Garbage Collector

Vancouver Island, BC

I caught this Turkey Vulture just as he was about to take off in search of a meal. In BC you have to look twice if you see one of these birds in flight to distinguish it from a Bald Eagle, particularly an immature eagle (no white head). In flight, the Turkey Vulture uses thermals to move through the air, flapping its wings infrequently and the red head is another strong identifying feature.
