The coyote was successful and through stealth and agility bagged his prey. The demise of one field rodent contributed significantly to his daily nutritional needs, not even the tail was wasted. The coyotes in Yellowstone are among the largest coyotes in the United States; adults average about 30 lbs. and some weigh up to 40 lbs. They stand less than two feet tall and vary in color from gray to tan, sometimes showing a reddish tint to their coat.
