This dock leads out towards a stretch of water directly in front of Royal Roads University. The university’s name came primarily from the word “Roads” which does not refer to streets but is rather an old naval term for an unsheltered anchorage. The stretch of water in this photo is the "Road" where incoming and outgoing sailing vessels anchored before entering Victoria's inner harbour. Specifically the navel vessels of the English fleet, hence the addition of "Royal" to the name.
