Goat Rocks Wilderness - Bear Creek Mountain

This was a hike from October 2002 for which I was unable to get many good photos. A combination of facing the sun, mixed clouds and my own lack of knowledge at that time in dealing with that lead to a lot of dark mountains and blown out skies. I wound up playing around a lot with black and white versions of these pics because the blown out skies are not quite as bad in black and white in my opinion. I even threw in a sepia and a red Color Negative which I thought was kind of cool looking. Still, the scenery is gorgeous there even if I couldn't capture it on compact flash:

Yes, even though I had limited views it was obvious that you would have nice views on a clear day of Rainier, Adams as well as the Goat Rocks. For all I know, you might even be able to see Hood or St. Helens on a clear day. I'll be back to Bear Creek Mtn, if not this year then probably in 2005.

This gallery is one of my older ones, from late 2002 so it was before I had any knowledge of filters at all as I do now. A circular polarizer and a graduated ND filter both would have come in handy on that day. My timing was poor as well, the view from Bear Creek Mtn to the Goat Rocks Crest basically faces SW and I didn't get there till late afternoon meaning that I was facing basically directly into the sun or into brightly backlit clouds. Adams and Rainier were both totally covered in clouds.

I hike Bear Creek Mtn almost every year. There are beautiful views. Hope you visit again on a clear day. You might try a circular polorizer to capture good images of the mountains and get nice blue sky.
