The stylish Olympus TG-850 with newly-integrated tiltable LCD delivers enhanced functionality, whilst maintaining Tough performance
Hamburg, 01/29/2014 • A TOUGH camera with fabulous style – Olympus has taken ruggedness to a new level with the TG-850. The striking newcomer combines tough perfor-mance with beautiful styling, a newly-developed 21-105mm* 5x optical zoom lens and a tiltable monitor, to extend the range of shooting options. The camera is well-suited to tough environments – it is shock-proof** to 2.1m, waterproof** to 10m, crushproof** to 100 kg, and can operate in temperatures as low as -10°C**. The ultra-wide lens is the widest in the tough compact camera class, while the monitor can be tilted through 180°. Yet the screen is ultra-flush with the body, and together with the reduced-size lens unit this enhances the sleek good looks of this compact camera. Its features make it particularly well-suited for underwater photography – when capturing semi-submerged shots, for instance, tilting the LCD through 90° eliminates the need for the photographer to dip underwater. The enlarged rear grip ensures easy handling, while the ultrafast auto-focusing system FAST AF and the TruePic VII image processor capability mean you always get your shot, in good quality. The camera also offers interval shooting, and is capable of taking smooth 60p Full HD movies. The TG-850 is available from March 2014. It costs €299.00, and comes in a choice of silver, black or white.
TOUGH design
The TG-850 features a sporty and stylish design, incorporating soft surfaces and sharp lines, which combines with its tough performance to make it eminently adaptable. It’s a camera tough enough to go anywhere, whilst also offering the ease of handling you want when shooting street scenes. The 180° tiltable monitor is brilliant for “selfies”. And the camera is able to use an optional FlashAir card (with wireless LAN function) allowing to connect the camera to a Wi-Fi enabled smartphone or PC and view or import images from the FlashAir card.
TOUGH image quality
The elements in the lens configuration use new glass materials that can be made thinner and more compact, for a Super HR lens with a high refractive index. Optical performance is maintained even at wide-angle settings, while the camera’s iHS technologies enable shots to be captured in all shooting conditions (max. ISO 6400).
Camera shake is significantly reduced via a lens shift image stabilization mechanism, which also contributes to a more compact unit overall. The control incorporates the same lens shift technology found on D-SLR models. And the camera's 16 Megapixel BSI CMOS sensor combines with the nextgeneration TruePic VII processor to get the very best out of the camera’s high-performance optics.
TOUGH versatility
The TG-850 features Art Filters, including Pop Art and Soft Focus, allowing the user to get creative. It offers interval shooting (up to 99 frames, at a preset interval from 10 seconds to 60 minutes), and is also capable of producing smooth 60p Full HD movies or high-speed movies (HS120fps with resolution 640x480, or HS240fps with 320x240).
TOUGH speed
The LCD monitor quickly reproduces fast-moving scenes, and in combination with FAST AF and 7 fps sequential shooting, this makes the camera well suited to shooting fleeting subjects, particularly outdoors where its tough performance comes into its own.
Accessories:
Multi-purpose camera. A universal camera case in 3 colour options (red, blue, black), designed with rugged use in mind. Its thick 1.5 mm silicon material protects against shocks, while the outer mesh design facilitates draining. The karabiner and stopper are plastic, chosen with saltwater environments in mind, and the neoprene inlet is similarly well-suited for waterfront use.
