Memonial to Munich's Liberation by U.S. Forces in 1945

Munich, Germany

"On 30 April, 1945 the U.S. Armed Forces Liberated Munich from the tyranny of National Socialism"
This was the same day that Hitler shot himself in Berlin. The prior day, U.S. Army forces liberated the concentation camp at Dachau. Historian David Clay Large says that U.S. forces encountered virtually no opposition when they entered Munich. Instead, amid the rubble, people wer trying to clear away signs and symbols of Nazi control. Some 6600 Munchners had been killed in the bombings and 15,000 wounded. More than 200,000 Munchners were living elsewhere in Germany as evacuees. 50% of the housing in Munich was destroyed along with 90% of the historic core of the city.
