The international space station transits the sun as seen from the ground in Milwaukee on March 17, 2010 in this ten-frame composite. At the moment, the station was 325 miles away. I shot this photo with a Sigma 500mm f/4.5 lens and a JMB Identi-View solar filer. Attached to the lens was an Imaging Source DMK firewire camera, which took these pictures at about 30 frames per second during the station's transit, which lasted less than a half second. The gaps indicate moments when the computer could not keep up with the data flow from the camera. At the right is sunspot number 1054.
