A few days after a new dark spot on Jupiter was discovered by an Australian amateur, I photographed it from my backyard on July 24, 2009. The spot, which scientists believe was caused by an asteroid or comet impact, is visible in the center of the planet's southern hemisphere, in this case, at the top of the photo.
The image is a combination of 59 frames taken with a Nikon D300 and a 10-inch Newtonian reflector, using a Brandon 12mm eyepiece.
