My Miniature Collection

When I was perusing eBay a few years ago, I saw a book called "Making Miniatures" by Venus & Martin Dodge. I bid on it and won, hence I became engrossed in 1/12th or dollshouse miniatures. The ratio 1/12th means that each inch is the equivalent of 1 foot in the old imperial scale. So a 6" figure would be 6' tall in reality. I have always been interested in building and the above-mentioned book contained some inspiring projects, four of which I went on to complete. The Garden Shed was a delight to 'build', as well as the Farmhouse Kitchen, an Edwardian Lady's Bedroom and The Attic, all of which, became the 3 storey house. My husband too became very involved and as a retired builder, 'ripped-up' lots of wood for me to use on his saw bench. He made the boxes and I 'fitted' them out. Having worked for 30+ years in display, (or as it became known, Visual Merchandising), it was easy for me to finish each room having watched the window-dressers 'dress' a window. Collecting miniatures has always been a hobby embraced by many... even the Queen Mother had a dollshouse which one can see on display at Windsor Castle. It's easy to become deeply involved in the miniature world. The serious collector will tell you that their collection is not for children but rather for 'big kids' to 'play' with. Most of my collection I have acquired from the UK, Germany, Switzerland and the USA. It is not a cheap hobby, but I've always believed if you're going to do something do it well and don't skimp.
