East Maitland @ Maitland Gaol

A key anchor attraction of the Hunter, Maitland Gaol has a vibrant history spanning more than 150 years. After housing some of Australia's most hardened and notorious criminals, Maitland Gaol closed as a Correctional Institution in 1998. The cell doors have now been swung open, with visitors invited to 'serve time' learning about the facility, past prisoners and daring escapes. Open 7 days, Maitland Gaol offers visitors the opportunity to indulge in a world class self-guided audio tour. Additionally, themed-guided tours and torchlight tours by night are regularly available and are a great way to interpret this unique attraction. Only the brave can battle a group sleepover night. During the School Vacation, the Maitland City Library hosts Summer Night Flicks on the four Friday nights of January.

Some additions to this gallery around East Maitland and surrounds. The original East Maitland railway station backs onto the much bigger existing station, but sadly as all abandoned structures, has been vandalised with the usual mindless graffiti. The barn advertising "Dr. Morse's Indian Root Pills" has been refurbished. These pills claimed to be a cure for everything from digestive complaints, sick headaches, kidney disease, piles, colds, boils, flatulance, rheumatism, malaria & both constipation & dysentry. They were originally made in West Virgina in 1833 and were widely advertised on rooftops, shedwalls, city buildings, parapets & facades from one side of the country to the other. The first advertisement in Australia was in 1885 on a handpainted sign visible from the Melbourne to Ballarat railway. This barn is on the road to Morpeth.
