Down to Dora Creek and on to Frosts Rest

Dora Creek is a 30 minute drive south of Newcastle. It is a small rural suburb of the City of Lake Macquarie in New South Wales, Australia, located west of Lake Macquarie in New South Wales and north of the town of Morisset. Dora Creek is named for the creek running through its centre, and was originally known as Doree Doree in the local Aboriginal language, which means "Creek running into a lake". The sediment deposited by the creek has not formed a large flood plain, but rather two banks which have formed into two peninsulas jutting out into the lake like a point. Timber-getting was most important and the creek provided transport. It was sheltered and wave-free and penetrated the forest country. Ketches took the timber to Sydney, being poled up and down the creek. Later paddlewheels were used. The timber was general lumber for building, she-oak shingles for roofs before the advent of corrugated iron, and lathes for plastering. Half a dozen small sawmills operated on the banks of the Creek, loading directly into the ketches. Bullock teams brought the timber to the mills. Pit props were also sent by barge to Cockle Creek for the mines at the northern end of the lake.

After spending a few hours @ Dora Creek I drove across to Cooranbong to Frosts Rest where my Great-Great Grandfather and Grandmother and their daughter are buried. The graves have been carefully tended by locals for many a year, and are in excellent condition. I am very fortunate to have access to my Paternal antecedents. (See photos for the history of Joseph Frost). Name plaques of more recently deceased family members have been added to the grave plot.

The landscape around the Dora Creek and Cooranbong areas is rural and lush, the waterways picturesque and very popular with those who can afford to live on the shores of magnificent Lake Macquarie. We are blessed to live so close to places around the lake of such historic interest.
