![]() Skyfull of Snow Geese One of the great things about Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge in Mound City, MO is the migration of birds. While it is a crazy place in the spring, fall isn't a bad time either. Here a small group of Snow Geese take to the air. The sounds in the air is amazing from all the duck and swans on the water. Lots of people driving around the wetland and taking photos.

![]() Juvenile Bald Eagle Spotted this juvenile Bald Eagle while visiting Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge. It is always neat to find Bald Eagles but catching this one was pretty special as I seldom see a juvenile one this close.
![]() Trumpeter Swans There were a large number of Trumpeter Swans this day at Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge. They are a graceful bird and I haven't seen this many at one time before.
![]() Swans Geese And Ducks The day was bright and the noise was loud. While there are a number of snow geese heading for their wintering ground, there art a number of trumpeter swans about. I haven't figured out how these birds seem to land safetly in a crowd but they seem to get it done.

![]() Ducks and Swans A whole lot of ducks and swans at Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge. |
![]() 2021 Snow Geese Rising A couple of miles away and I can see what I came for, Snow Geese! This is only a small grouping of what is resting up as there are several more ponds around. Where there are this many birds there will be a lot of other wildlife one might see. Since this is a 7,440 acres refuge there will be a lot to see if you keep your eyes open.
![]() Red-winged Black Bird Males It is spring time at Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge and beside Snow Geese, here is just one tree of several full of male Red-winged Black birds looking for a date. I didn't see these guys as I was looking down and over the water but since I had my window down I heard them!
![]() 2021 Snow Geese Panorama I am a long way from the flock but but this is just a few of them in this view. The noise was great!
![]() 2021 Snow Geese Migration Close Up It gets a little crowded when you zoom in on the scene. |
![]() 2021 Snow Geese Migration Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge is a fantastic place during the spring Snow Geese migration. Talking with another photographer she said the count was 300,000. You can see all 300,000 of them at once if you get far enough back. Looks like a blanket of snow!
![]() Muskrat And Sunshine With spring in the air everyone and everything wants out in the warmth and sunshine. Here is a muskrat setting in the sunshine and scratching his fur.
![]() Nesting Eagle Can just see the head of the eagle above top of the nest. |
![]() Eagle Lookout A few trees from the nest is the mate's lookout. |
![]() DSC03171.jpg While there are a large number of Snow Geese at Loess Bluffs National WIldlife Refuge, I have been there when there were more! There lots of people watching and even a bus.
![]() DSC03263.jpg Landing gear is down for these Snow Geese but it seems awfully crowed. They all made it safe and sound.

![]() DSC03209.jpg Snow Geese migration is in full force and a great place to see this is at Mound City, MO. Lots of people driving the 10 miles around the wetland. Lots of water fowl to be found, American Coots, Northern Shovelers, Canada Geese, Bald Eagles and more. Here is a flight inbound to the water. Just neat!
![]() _DSC8911.jpg Snow geese are migrating and they have a stop over at Squaw Creek. While it appears there are a large number of geese it was a lite day but still it is neat to hear and see them. Also saw a Bald Eagle, muskrat, swans, American Coot and two Great Blue Herons.
![]() _DSC8401.jpg After a long take off the Tundra Swans are airborne. With the long flight ahead of them Squaw Creek offers a great resting spot.
![]() _DSC8398_2.jpg The Tundra Swans need to gather some speed before liftoff. Thankfully Squaw Creek provides the long runways needed.
![]() _DSC8385.jpg With the large flocks already on the water it is hard to believe that more are flying in.
![]() _DSC8437.jpg An amazing collection of snow geese migrating north. The sounds that come from the flock is steady and there is a unending motion of lift off and settling down on the water. This is only a subsection of the flock moving through on this day.
![]() _DSC8420.jpg It is just amazing to see sight. The sky just fills with black and white color and it will get more intense.
![]() DSC05926.jpg Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge is a great place to see wildlife. Here is a large flock of Snow Geese as they stop over during their migration.
![]() DSC05898.jpg A lone American White Pelican in flight on a overcast day.
![]() DSC05803.jpg Somebody decided it was time to move and it was just like a shade of geese being pulled into the air.
![]() DSC05883.jpg Found a few Pelican at Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge. The "centerboard" on the bill indicates a breeding adult.
![]() DSC05883.jpg Unbelievable! Thousand of geese take flight and fill the sky at Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge. I have to see this again.
